Freelance Theatre Director

I am a freelance theatre director, working project-by-project across plays, musicals, new writing, and devised performance. I collaborate with theatres, companies, and independent artists to lead productions from first concept through to opening night, shaping a clear creative vision while supporting strong, collaborative processes.

My practice spans a wide range of forms, including theatre for young audiences, physical theatre (including puppetry and Commedia), musicals, and new works. Alongside stage productions, I also direct educational and corporate projects, adapting theatrical storytelling to different audiences and contexts.

As an independent director, I oversee all artistic aspects of a production — from casting and design to rehearsals, technical delivery, and performance — balancing creative ambition with strong organisation and clear communication. I am particularly committed to collaboration, learning, and engagement, with a strong track record of developing new writing and working with emerging theatre companies and artists.

Past Projects

Anna was the perfect lifesaver and took fantastic leadership in getting the piece on stage in a very short time. Her initiative in planning, set design, props, and sound was greatly appreciated.

Director Anna Murton has given a true gift to Amsterdam theatergoers with this production. Her staging choices were perfect. The actors' positioning consistently created visually interesting stage pictures that both supported and propelled the narrative. You could have freeze-framed nearly any moment of the show and walked away with a professional photoshoot. (Sean Olsen-Roy) ‍ ‍
